The site is located on Taygetos Mountain, west of Sparti (East Taygetos Forest). It is covered by Fir (Abies cephalonica) in pure or mixed stands with Black pine (Pinus nigra), Juniper (Juniperus sp.) and broadleaved shrubs. Fir trees appear from 700 m a.s.l. The mountain is the southern most distribution limit of the species in Greece. Fir on Taygetos Mountain has suffered several infestations, mainly from bark-eat insects. According to observations of the local Forest Service, the infestations are more severe on Fir trees growing on locations with poor soils and dry conditions and they are considered as a secondary result of the marginal soil and climatic conditions. The Forest Service of Sparti administers the Taygetos area.
